Tour Description
Day 1 – Arrival at San Gerardo – Park registration
First of all, every tourist must arrive in San Gerardo de Rivas before 3 p.m. Once in the community, it is necessary to register at the administrative offices of MINAE. This registration is mandatory and must be done in person. You will need to present a valid and current identification card or passport. During registration, you will receive the tickets that allow your stay in the park. After registering with MINAE, we will proceed to the office where luggage will be handed over. Once this process is completed, we will go to the community of Herradura, where the luggage will be delivered to the muleteers and porters.
Day 2 – Ascent from Herradura to Paso de los Indio
We will begin our day with a light breakfast. Then, a local vehicle will take us to the starting point of the hike. The distance from Herradura to Paso de los Indios is approximately 15 km. It is important to note that along the way, you will pass through several private farms before reaching the boundary of the national park and finally arriving at the Paso de los Indios Refuge.

Day 3 – Paso de los Indios to Base Crestones
Our day will begin very early, allowing us to witness the sunrise from the summit of Cerro Urán. After enjoying this magnificent sunrise, we will begin the hike to the Base Crestones refuge, covering approximately 16 km. Along the way, we will reach the summit and visit the highest point in our country
Day 4 – Descent from Base Crestones to San Gerardo
Finally, it's time to say goodbye to our beloved Chirripó. We will begin with the descent. Upon arriving in San Gerardo, internal transportation will be waiting to take us to the hotel. There, you will be able to have lunch and use the showers. And now, it’s time to return home and cherish all the beautiful experiences we’ve had.

The following details what is included in the package:
- One night of lodging the day before the hike. Includes the following services
- Dinner on the day of arrival in Herradura de Rivas, including 1 breakfast and lunch
- Entrance fees, admission, and lodging in the National Park.
- One night of lodging at the Paso de los Indios shelter
- Entry fees for private farms.
- At Base Crestones, 1 night of lodging in a shared room is included. Each room has 2 bunk beds, and each bed comes with 1 sheet, 1 pillow, and 2 blankets per person.
- Shared bathrooms at Base Crestones.
- Meals inside the National Park: 1 lunch, 1 breakfast at Base Crestones, and 1 natural juice or hot beverage per mealtime.
- Guide service during the 3 days and 2 nights.
- Use of kitchens at the Paso de los Indios shelter.
Rates do not include
- Transportation from your place of residence to Herradura de Rivas.
- Luggage porterage. Service cost: $160 per porter with a maximum load of 12 kg.
- Meals at the Paso de los Indios lodge
- Gas for stove use at the Paso de los Indios shelter.
- Sleeping bag, sheets, or blankets for the first night at the Paso de los Indios shelter.
- Accompaniments for hot beverages at Base Crestones.
- Hot beverages outside of mealtimes are not included.
- Snacks.
Terms and Conditions
- Prices adjust according to the number of people participating in the tour.
- The tour has a maximum capacity of 8 people.
- Children pay the same as adults.
- An intermediate level of physical fitness is required.
- There is no cell phone service for most of the route

- In case of emergency, horses from the community may be used. This cost will be the responsibility of the participant requesting the service.
- Internal transportation may vary depending on the season and the condition of the roads.
- Tour available year-round.
- Porter service is only offered from Herradura to Paso de los Indios and vice versa. From Paso de los Indios to the refuge, each participant must carry their own load. Once at Base Crestones, the service can be hired again to carry luggage down from Base Crestones to San Gerardo.

Additional information
- Every tourist needs to register the day before entering the National Park. Registration is done at the MINAE Administrative Offices located in San Gerardo de Rivas, Pérez Zeledón
- This registration must be done in person for each and every member of the group. Entry must be completed between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. You must present an identity card or passport in the case of foreigners. This is necessary to obtain the receipt that guarantees entry and stay within the Protected Wilderness Area.
- Luggage must be delivered one day before your ascent date (the day you arrive in Herradura). Therefore, it must be delivered before 6 p.m. If it is not delivered by this time, you will not be able to use these services.
- La entrega de equipaje debe realizarse un día antes de la fecha que van a subir (día que llegan Herradura). Por lo tanto debe de realizarse antes de las 6pm. En caso de no entregarse a esta hora, no podrán hacer uso de estos servicios.
- The porter service costs $160 per porter, with a maximum of 12 kilograms. The porters will only carry the luggage needed to the Paso de los Indios shelter; afterward, they will return to Herradura de Rivas with the equipment that is not needed for the rest of the trip.
- At the time of booking, the people attending the National Park must be 100% sure of their attendance. Otherwise, once the reservation is made with the National Park, no refunds will be given.
- Reservations for available dates will only be processed for people who have sent the tour payment receipt to the Caminatas email.
- It is important to mention that if there is any issue while ascending to Paso de los Indios or if the group cannot continue the hike, the guide may decide to return with the entire group. The guide cannot continue alone with part of the group and leave the rest behind. Nevertheless, if this happens, no refund will be given unless the cancellation was informed or enforced by SINAC.
