Tour Description
Day 1 – We will travel to the community of San Gerardo.
To begin, you must travel by your own vehicle or by bus to the community of San Gerardo de Rivas, as this is where our adventure starts.
Once in San Gerardo de Rivas
First of all, all visitors must register in person the day before entering the park at the MINAE Administrative Offices, located in San Gerardo de Rivas, Pérez Zeledón. Registration hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. You must present your ID card (or passport for foreign visitors), along with your reservation code (Caminatas al Chirripó will provide you with this code). Estimated registration time: 30 minutes
Pack your bags and rest
After registering at SINAC, you can check in at the assigned accommodation. Then, if you wish, you can explore the community by visiting the waterfalls, taking a cheese tour, or going to the hot springs. Alternatively, if you prefer to rest and prepare everything needed for this incredible adventure, that is also a good option.
Chirripó Express
Start of the hike – San Gerardo – Base Crestones – Summit of Cerro Chirripó
First, the hike will begin through private properties, which allow access to the park boundary, where the main trail to the summit starts. It is very important to start this section from 3 a.m. onward.
Arrival at Llano Bonito – Kilometer 7.5
After the first 4 hours of hiking, you will arrive at kilometer 7.5, called Llano Bonito. This is a place where you can have a snack, rest, and use the restroom facilities. This will be your first access point to refill your water bottles with potable water.
Closer and closer to Chirripó
Llegada al Refugio Base Crestones
First of all, be proud of your great progress and rest as much as needed. Refill your water bottles at the taps in the refuge’s restaurant area. Then, continue walking at your own pace for 5.1 km until you reach the summit. The estimated time to hike from the refuge to the summit is 2 to 3 hours.
Conquer the summit of Chirripó
Next, once you have conquered the highest point in our country, definitely take out your camera for that long-awaited photo at the sign. Sign the guestbook and enjoy the view of the lagoons. Absolutely take a well-deserved rest, recharge your energy, and then begin the descent back to the Base Crestones refuge
Descent from Base Crestones to San Gerardo
After arriving at the refuge, there is the possibility to buy snacks and coffee. Rest as needed, and try to leave before 10 a.m. The descent will take approximately 6 to 8 hours, depending on your physical condition
We did it!
Goal achieved
Finally, after a long day, arriving at kilometer 0, everything will feel unreal. We made it! We climbed to the highest point in Costa Rica. Now, let’s take a shower and have lunch. And with that, we conclude the mission, returning to our homes.
